We had a great time touring a local quarry (open for their 75th anniversary... they only do this every few years)... they took us on a bus down into the current mining hole (we went down to the 4th level... about 150 ft... couldn't go any further b/c it lowest level was filled with water b/c the pump broke)... then the kids got to climb on all the ginormous trucks and equipment... and we drove through the rock crushing section. Very cool, even to me! And we ran into lots of friends there ;)
